Prelude and Chaconne

Elisabeth Jacquet de le Guerre

Here are two fine movements by an extraordinary composer. Elisabeth Jacquet was born into a family of musicians and instrument makers, performed for Louis XIV at the age of five, and became part of the French court’s musical establishment. She was renowned as a composer and performer during her lifetime, and composed and published vocal and chamber music in addition to two volumes of keyboard suites, in 1687 and 1707.

These two pieces form part of a set of pieces in A minor from the first of the keyboard collections. The prelude is unmeasured - in general notes are indicated with open noteheads, with rhythmic and harmonic interpretation to be inferred by the performer.
